چکیده

A compact separator consisting of two volutes (inlet and outlet) connected with a cylindrical chamber is proposed as a cost-effective alternative to conventional separators. The separator has a wide range of applications in the oil and gas industry. It has the advantages of being compact, free of the effect of motion on floating platforms, more tolerant to flow fluctuations and can be modularised in series to remove liquid or gas carry-over. In order to optimize the system performance a series of CFD simulations is programmed covering a wide range of inlet flows (phase mixing percentage). The starting point will be the CFD analysis of the liquid-gas flow, in various inlet flow patterns. The present paper presents the results of the initial two-phase separation process simulation, carried out using the FLUENT commercial CFD code in terms of pressure, velocity and volume fraction distribution for both phases and all over the separator. The cross analysis of the results leads to a better understanding of the two-phase flow and separation inside each component and aids the research team to set up an experimental procedure up and proceed to the next step of the research programme.

The Effect of Mixture Velocity and Droplet Diameter on Oil-water Separator using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

The characteristics of fluid flow and phase separation in an oil-water separator were numerically analysed as part of the work presented herein. Simulations were performed for different velocities and droplet diameters, and the way this parameters can influence the separator geometry was studied. The simulations were carried out using the software package Fluent 6.2, which is designed for numer...

Subcooled two-phase flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink: comparison of conventional numerical models

Subcooled flow boiling in multi-microchannels can be used as an efficient thermal management approach in compact electrical devices. Highly subcooled flow boiling of HFE 7100 is studied in two microchannel heat sinks to choose a proper numerical model for simulating boiling flows in microchannels. Results of five different numerical models, including Volume of Fluid (VOF), Eulerian boiling, Eul...

An Overview of Challenges and Errors in Sampling and Recombination of Gas Condensate Fluids

A proper understanding of reservoir fluid phase behavior is the first crucial step in the development and production of an oil/gas field. This paper addresses the challenges and errors associated with the fluid sampling that may arise before, during and after the sampling operation. For this aim, DST and PVT data of exploration and production wells of a supergiant offshore gas condensate reserv...

Applying a Modified Two-Fluid Model to Numerical Simulation of Two-Phase Flow in the Membrane Chlor-Alkali Cells

In this study, gas evolution in a vertical electrochemical cell is investigated numerically with a modified two-fluid model. The mathematical model involves solution of separate transport equation for the gas and liquid phases with an allowance to inter-phase transfer of mass and momentum. The governing equations are discreted via the finite volume technique and then are solved by ...

Numerical Evaluation of Hydraulic Fracturing Pressure in a Two-Phase Porous Medium

Hydraulic fracturing is a phenomenon in which cracks propagate through the porous medium due to high pore fluid pressure. Hydraulic fracturing appears in different engineering disciplines either as a destructive phenomenon or as a useful technique. Modeling of this phenomenon in isothermal condition requires analysis of soil deformation, crack and pore fluid pressure interactions. In this paper...
